| Canine Hip Dysplasia is very prevalent in many breeds and particularly in the Fila Brasileiro. Less than 70% of the Fila Brasileiros evaluated by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals have normal hips. Approximately 20% of Filas studied have Canine Elbow Dysplasia. This site is being designed as a tool, and represents work in progress. The goals include provision of information on individual dogs to those who are seriously dedicated to improving the breed. Intelligent use of this information will result in the reduction of canine hip dysplasia and canine elbow dysplasia in the Fila Brasileiro. |

The above is excerpted from a radiograph of a Fila with hip dysplasia. Her PennHIP Report, based on films taken when younger, revealed the degenerative hip disease. She was subsequently spayed. The disease is progressing and ultimately she may require a total hip procedure or euthanasia. Many reputable breeders may contracturally offer a replacment pup for a pup sold as "show quality", later determined to be dysplastic. Unless the purchaser wants the heartbreak of another dysplastic dog from the same breeder, research should be done. Ideally the elbow and hip status of the parents, ancestors, and sibs of a potential purchase or breeding should be studied. Studies of reverse pedigrees may be helpful in these situations. Again, with the high incidence of hip and elbow dysplasia, one should carefully research the parantage and sibs of a potential pup or potential sire or dam used as breeders. This is essential to the production of future generations of sound dogs.

You may veiw the site's embroynic Pedigree Program. A pedigree, studbook or registry is of little value if the information cannot be utilized to improve the breed. Additional programs will be available on this site to display the OFA reports, PennHIP reports, photos, and additional pertinent information on individual dogs as well as contact information provided by the owners. This information will be available to those who wish to research potential matings or purchases. Reverse pedigree lookups for the Fila Brasileiro will be available.
Approximately 700 Filas have had Xrays submitted for OFA and/or PennHip evaluation. Currently the dogs which have passed the OFA evaluation thru June 2003 are included. Additionally those dogs which have had PennHIP evaluations and whose owners have forwarded copies of the report are included. Not all dogs in the pedigree database have been evaluated for congenital hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia. Some pedigree information has been submitted for historical purposes. For those looking to research a potential breeding or potential purchase, clearly information on those dogs whose hips and elbows have been evaluated is of primary importance. |
